Coverage Tips
  • • Roll toward the main light source to minimize visible lap marks.
  • • Ceiling paint is formulated thicker with anti-drip properties — recommended over wall paint.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Set paint options — Choose number of coats (2 is standard) and paint finish. Flat/matte is best for most ceilings.
  2. Select ceiling type — Pick Flat, Textured, Popcorn, Vaulted, or Cathedral. The calculator adjusts coverage automatically.
  3. Enter dimensions — Input length and width for each ceiling. You can use feet or inches.
  4. Add more ceilings — Click "Add Ceiling" to include multiple rooms. Each can have a different type.
  5. Review results — See total paint needed, optimized shopping list, and cost estimate.

How We Calculate

Adjusted Area = Base Area × Surface Factor
Paint Gallons = (Adjusted Area × Coats) ÷ Coverage Rate
Flat: 400 sq ft/gal | Eggshell: 350 sq ft/gal | Primer: 300 sq ft/gal

Surface Factor by Ceiling Type

  • • Flat / Smooth: 1.0× (no adjustment)
  • • Textured: 1.2× (+20% more paint)
  • • Popcorn / Acoustic: 1.4× (+40% more paint)
  • • Vaulted (45°): 1.4× (+40% surface area)
  • • Cathedral: 1.5× (+50% surface area)

Why Surface Factor Matters

  • Texture: Rough surfaces have more area to cover
  • Absorption: Popcorn ceilings soak up more paint
  • Angles: Vaulted ceilings have larger actual area
  • Access: High ceilings may need more for drips

Example: 12×14 Popcorn Ceiling

  • Base Area: 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft
  • Surface Factor: 1.4 (popcorn)
  • Adjusted Area: 168 × 1.4 = 235 sq ft
  • Paint (2 coats): (235 × 2) ÷ 400 = 1.2 gallons
  • Buy: 2 gallons (rounded up for touch-ups)
