How Much Deck Railing Material Do You Need?

Plan posts, balusters and rail boards for level wood railing, one run at a time.

Your railing runs

Starts with a 12 ft example. Measure each run between its end-post centers.

Run 1

Center to center, not the clear opening. For 12 ft 6 in, enter 12.5.
6 ft is an example. Use the spacing allowed by your plan and rail system; posts are evenly spaced within each run.

Actual widths: 3.5 in posts, 1.5 in balusters. Target maximum clear gap: 3.875 in. Change these below.

Posts: 3.5 in actual width. Balusters: 1.5 in actual width. Final post and baluster lengths come from your plan. One board per rail piece; no offcut reuse.

For open, level wood railing with equal bays. Confirm spacing, attachment and final cuts against your plan; this estimate does not approve the build.

A bay is the opening between two posts. Displayed dimensions are rounded; verify the actual openings and gaps on site.

Railing project examples

All use the example specs: 6 ft maximum centers, 3½ in posts, 1½ in balusters, 3⅞ in target gap, 10% spare balusters and 8 ft rail boards.

12 ft straight run

3 posts · 29 balusters · 4 boards

26 balusters installed + 3 spare.

Two 6 ft bays. Each clear opening is 68½ in, with 13 balusters and 3½ in equal gaps.

16 ft straight run

4 posts · 37 balusters · 6 boards

33 balusters installed + 4 spare.

Three equal bays. Each has 11 balusters, with clear gaps of about 3.667 in.

12 + 8 ft corner

5 posts · 47 balusters · 8 boards

42 balusters installed + 5 spare.

The runs share one corner post. Separate runs would need 6 posts; the other quantities stay the same.

Measure centers, then check openings

Measure each straight run from its first post center to its last post center. Start a new run at a corner; skip stair and gate openings.

The calculator divides each run into equal bays. Subtracting one actual post width from the center spacing gives the clear bay opening. That opening sets the baluster count and equal gaps at both ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

For this calculator's example, a 12 ft run measured between end-post centers uses 3 posts and 26 installed balusters. That assumes two equal bays, 3½ in actual posts, 1½ in actual balusters and a 3⅞ in target maximum gap. With the optional 10% spare allowance, buy 29 balusters. Different post locations or widths change the count.
Enter each straight run from the center of its first post to the center of its last post. A run ends at a corner or an opening. Do not enter the clear opening or a deck perimeter that includes unrailed sides. If your existing posts form unequal bays, plan each opening separately.
Add each straight run separately. Select “Shares the previous run's end post” only when both runs physically use the same post at that corner. The shared post is counted once. For a gate or stair opening, add an independent run with the box unchecked; do not include the opening in the run length. Closed loops and branching junctions are outside this calculator's scope.
The shopping list covers usable posts, balusters and the two horizontal wood rails in each bay. It excludes cap rails, gates, brackets, connectors, post anchors, other fasteners and labor. Rail boards are counted at one board per piece, without reusing offcuts. Posts and balusters are counted individually at the lengths your plan requires. The calculator does not work out how many pieces you can cut from longer stock. Confirm rail connection allowances and final post and baluster lengths from your plan. The calculation does not approve post spacing, attachment, guard height or structural loads.
