Seed Needed:1.65 lbs (with 10% buffer)
Retail Order: 1 × 3-lb bag (1.35 lbs spare)
Estimated Cost: $5 – $11

Scenario 2: Typical Suburban Backyard (2,500 sq ft)

Fall overseeding to thicken a mature quarter-acre lot backyard and crowd out spring weeds.

Rate:Overseeding (3.0 lbs / 1,000 sq ft)
Seed Needed:8.25 lbs (with 10% buffer)
Retail Order: 1 × 10-lb bag (1.75 lbs spare)
Estimated Cost: $25 – $54

Scenario 3: Bare Ground New Lawn (5,000 sq ft)

Seeding a newly graded front yard on bare topsoil using drought-tolerant Tall Fescue.

Area:50 × 100 ft (5,000 sq ft)
Rate:New Lawn (8.0 lbs / 1,000 sq ft)
Seed Needed:44.0 lbs (with 10% buffer)
Retail Order: 3 × 20-lb bags (16.0 lbs spare) or 1 × 50-lb contractor bag
Estimated Cost: $132 – $286

5 Essential Steps for High-Germination Seeding

Achieving a lush, weed-free lawn depends heavily on seed-to-soil contact and moisture control during the first 21 days.

1

Mow Short & Dethatch

For overseeding, cut your grass down to 1.5–2 inches and vigorously rake away dead thatch and clippings so seeds can contact bare soil directly.

2

Level Low Spots with Topsoil

Fill minor depressions with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of screened topsoil or compost. Good drainage prevents seed puddling and rot.

3

Split Seed into Two Passes

Set your broadcast spreader to half the target rate. Spread half walking north-to-south, and the remaining half east-to-west for uniform density.

4

Keep the Seedbed Consistently Moist

Water lightly 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes so the top half-inch never dries out. If the seed dries out after it swells, it will not sprout.

5

Wait for 3–3.5 Inches for First Mow

Allow new turf blades to reach 3 to 3.5 inches tall before mowing. Use a sharp mower blade to avoid tearing fragile roots, and cut no more than the top 1/3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Application rates depend on your grass species and project type. For a new lawn on bare dirt, cool-season mixes like Sun & Shade or Tall Fescue need 6 to 8 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Tiny-seeded Kentucky Bluegrass needs only 2 to 3 pounds. For overseeding an existing lawn to thicken thin turf, you only need about half that rate (1.5 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet).
Overseeding means spreading grass seed over an established lawn to fill bare spots, choke out weeds, and improve turf thickness without disturbing the soil. Seeding a new lawn means starting on bare dirt after tilling or grading. New lawns need double the seed rate because every square inch depends entirely on new sprouts with no existing grass to shelter them.
Coverage depends on the grass variety and whether you overseed or start fresh. For overseeding with Sun & Shade mix (3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft), a 20-lb bag covers about 6,000 to 6,600 square feet with a 10% waste buffer. For planting a brand-new Tall Fescue lawn (8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft), that same bag covers roughly 2,200 to 2,500 square feet.
The difference comes down to seed size and count per pound. Kentucky Bluegrass seeds are tiny—a single pound contains roughly 1.3 to 2 million seeds. Tall Fescue seeds are much larger, with only 200,000 to 250,000 seeds per pound. Because one pound of Bluegrass delivers 6 to 8 times more individual seeds than Fescue, you need far fewer pounds per 1,000 square feet to grow a dense lawn.
Sprouting times vary by species. Perennial Ryegrass comes up fastest in 5 to 10 days, while Tall Fescue and Sun & Shade blends emerge in 7 to 14 days. Kentucky Bluegrass takes the longest at 14 to 30 days, and warm-season Bermudagrass needs 7 to 14 days in warm soil (70°F+). Keep the top half-inch of soil moist with light daily watering so sprouts emerge on schedule.
