Pro Tips
  • • Buy all paint for the same room from one batch for consistent color
  • • Start with ceilings, then walls, then trim — top to bottom
  • • Keep 1 extra quart per color for future touch-ups

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Set global options — Choose paint quality, number of coats, and waste percentage. These apply to all rooms.
  2. Pick a room type — Select Bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen, etc. The calculator auto-fills typical dimensions and recommends the best paint finish.
  3. Adjust dimensions — Fine-tune length, width, height, doors, and windows for each room. Check "Include ceiling" or "Accent wall" if needed.
  4. Add more rooms — Click "Add Room" to include every room in your project. Each room gets its own finish recommendation.
  5. Review the project summary — See per-room breakdown, combined shopping list, and total cost estimate — everything in one place.

How We Calculate

Per Room: Gallons = (Net Area × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Coverage × Coats
Project Total = Sum of all room gallons | Standard door: 21 sq ft | Window: 12 sq ft

Recommended Finish by Room

  • • Bedroom: Eggshell (375 sq ft/gal)
  • • Living Room: Eggshell (375 sq ft/gal)
  • • Kitchen: Satin (375 sq ft/gal)
  • • Bathroom: Semi-Gloss (350 sq ft/gal)
  • • Hallway: Satin (375 sq ft/gal)

Why Different Finishes?

  • Moisture: Bathrooms need semi-gloss to resist mildew
  • Durability: Kitchens and hallways get more wear
  • Appearance: Bedrooms look best with subtle sheen
  • Cleaning: Higher sheen = easier to wipe clean
  • Cost: Higher sheen costs slightly more per gallon

Example: 3-Bedroom Home

  • Bedroom 1 (12×12): 339 sq ft → 2 gal eggshell
  • Bedroom 2 (10×10): 267 sq ft → 2 gal eggshell
  • Bathroom (5×8): 163 sq ft → 1 gal semi-gloss
  • Kitchen (12×14): 373 sq ft → 2 gal satin
  • Living Room (16×20): 533 sq ft → 4 gal eggshell
  • Project Total: 11 gallons (2 coats, 10% waste)
