How Many Landscape Fabric Rolls Do You Need?

Enter your bed dimensions and the roll size you plan to buy. See how many rolls and staples to order, with seam overlap and cutting waste included before you shop.

Current estimate

200 sq ft · 6\" lap · 10% waste

Use the outside dimensions of the area you will cover. The perimeter is calculated automatically for staple planning.

The 6\" overlap default reduces usable coverage across each roll. Check your product label before ordering.

The overlap reduces a 300 sq ft label to about 250 sq ft of usable width coverage. One roll still covers this bed after waste.

Staples combine edge pins every 3 ft with one field staple per 100 sq ft. Change those assumptions under Advanced.

Use custom area + perimeter when several beds share one order. The perimeter is needed for a useful edge-staple estimate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the bed. Use rectangle for one simple bed, or custom area + perimeter for several or irregular beds.
  2. Choose the roll you will actually buy. The label coverage is reduced for the overlap you enter.
  3. Review the order summary. Rolls are rounded up to full rolls; staples combine edge and field estimates.
  4. Adjust Advanced settings when needed. Change overlap, waste, staple spacing, or prices to match your product and site.

How we calculate

rolls = ceil(area × (1 + waste) ÷ usable roll coverage)

Coverage after overlap

A 3 × 100 ft roll has 300 sq ft on the label. With a 6-inch seam overlap, its usable width is 2.5 ft, so the planning coverage becomes about 250 sq ft before cutting waste.

Staples are two estimates

Edge staples follow the outside perimeter and spacing. Field staples add a simple area allowance so a large bed is not pinned only at its border.

This is a shopping estimate, not a site-engineering takeoff. Follow the selected product's installation instructions for slopes, loose soil, drainage fabric, or erosion-control work.

When landscape fabric makes sense

Under decorative rock

Fabric can act as a separation layer under rock or gravel. Plan the rock quantity separately with the Gravel Calculator, then use this page for the fabric and pins beneath it.

Under organic mulch

A fabric layer may slow future planting and soil amendments. If the bed will be replanted often, skip the blanket weed-barrier assumption and use mulch depth planning instead.

For drainage or slopes

Those are different jobs. Woven/non-woven selection, overlap, anchoring, and separation requirements depend on the system and site; use the result here only as a starting material estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Enter the bed area, roll width and roll length. The calculator adds the selected waste, reduces the roll's usable width for seam overlap, and rounds up to full rolls to buy.
A 6-inch overlap is a practical default for adjacent fabric strips. Product instructions may call for a different lap, so change the overlap under Advanced when your roll or installation method specifies one.
The staple count starts with the outside perimeter, then adds a few field pins for the bed itself. The default is one edge staple every 3 feet plus one field staple per 100 square feet on flat ground.
Choose Custom area + perimeter. Add the areas of the beds you will cover and measure their combined outside edge. The roll estimate and the edge-staple estimate then stay separate and easy to adjust.
Start with the roll width multiplied by its length for the label coverage. The usable coverage is lower when strips overlap, so this calculator subtracts the overlap from the roll width before rounding up the rolls to buy.
