Shower Walls
Most showers have 3 walls (back + 2 sides). Add a 4th wall if tiling the ceiling.
Quick Presets:
Common: 3×6 subway ≈ 48/box, 4×4 ≈ 50/box, 12×12 ≈ 12/box

Calculation Steps
Total Wall Area: Sum of all enabled walls= 88 sq ft
Tile Area: 3" × 6"= 0.125 sq ft per tile
Base Tiles: 88 ÷ 0.125= 704 tiles
+ 10% Waste: 704 × 1.1= 775 tiles

How to Use the Shower Tile Calculator
- Measure your shower walls — Measure the width and height of each wall in inches. Standard shower height is 96 inches (8 feet).
- Add or remove walls — Most showers have 3 walls. Click "Add Wall" if you're tiling the ceiling or have a fourth wall.
- Choose your tile size — Classic 3×6 subway tiles are the most popular for showers. Larger tiles create a modern look.
- Add waste percentage — Showers have lots of cuts around fixtures. We recommend 10% for standard layouts, 15% for complex patterns.
- Review results — The calculator shows total tiles needed including waste, plus boxes to purchase.
How We Calculate
Tiles Needed = (Total Wall Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Waste%)
Example Calculation:
- • Back wall: 60" × 96" = 5,760 sq in = 40 sq ft
- • Side walls: 2 × (36" × 96") = 6,912 sq in = 48 sq ft
- • Total area: 40 + 48 = 88 sq ft
- • Tile: 3" × 6" = 18 sq in = 0.125 sq ft per tile
- • Base tiles: 88 ÷ 0.125 = 704 tiles
- • With 10% waste: 704 × 1.1 = 774 tiles

Frequently Asked Questions
A standard 36×60 inch shower with 8-foot walls needs about 120 square feet of tile. Using 3×6 subway tiles, that's roughly 960 tiles. With 10% waste, order about 1,056 tiles (22 boxes if 48 tiles per box).
Subway tiles (typically 3×6 inches) are popular for showers. Measure your wall area in square feet, divide by the tile size (0.125 sq ft per 3×6 tile) to get tile count. Add 10-15% waste for standard layouts, or 15-20% for herringbone or vertical patterns.
Classic 3×6 subway tiles are the most popular — they look great and are easy to work with. Larger tiles like 12×24 create a modern look with fewer grout lines, but require more precise installation.
Standard practice is to tile all the way to the ceiling (typically 8 feet). This prevents moisture damage and looks cleaner. Some people stop at 6-7 feet, but you'll need to paint or finish the upper wall.
Not required, but recommended for steam showers. For regular showers, a painted or moisture-resistant ceiling works fine. If you do tile the ceiling, add it as a fourth wall in this calculator.
Plan for 10% waste on straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or complex patterns. Showers have lots of cuts around fixtures, so don't skimp — running out mid-project is a nightmare.
Usually, yes. Shower floors use smaller tiles — 2×2" mosaics or smaller — because the extra grout lines add grip and let the tile follow the slope toward the drain. Walls can take larger tiles. The floor is a small area (a 3×3 ft pan is about 9 sq ft), so budget for it separately from your wall tile.
