Order Summary
Buying 10 boxes gives you 200 sq ft of product, about 2 sq ft beyond the waste-adjusted estimate.
Worked Examples
12×12 Bedroom
144 sq ft · 10% waste · 20 sq ft/box
A plain rectangular room with standard click-lock layout. 10% waste covers typical cuts at doorways.
15×20 Living Room
300 sq ft · 10% waste · 20 sq ft/box
At this size, box coverage becomes critical. Check your product label — some boxes cover only 18 sq ft.
4×20 Hallway
80 sq ft · 15% waste · 20 sq ft/box
Hallways have more cuts at door transitions. 15% waste is safer than the standard 10%.
Box Coverage Guide
Box coverage is printed on the vinyl plank package. Use the exact label value before ordering.
| Coverage | What it usually means | Ordering note |
|---|---|---|
| 18-20 sq ft/box | Smaller packs or narrow planks | Common on lower-cost or compact LVP boxes |
| 20-23 sq ft/box | Typical vinyl plank range | Good estimate if you are still comparing products |
| 23-25 sq ft/box | Larger packs | Fewer boxes, but you still round up to full boxes |
| Label value | Your exact product | Use this number for the final order |
Waste Factor Guide
Pick your waste based on layout and room shape.
| Pattern | Waste | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Straight lay | 5% | Minimal cuts; offcuts often reused |
| Standard staggered | 10% | Most common for rectangular rooms |
| Diagonal (45°) | 15% | Large corner triangles create waste |
| L-shaped room | 10-15% | Extra cuts at inside corners |
How We Calculate
Example: 12×15 ft room
- • Room area = 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft
- • Add 10% waste = 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft
- • Box coverage = 20 sq ft (check label)
- • Boxes = 198 ÷ 20 = 9.9 → round up to 10 boxes
