How to Use the Vinyl Tile Calculator

  1. Measure your room - Grab a tape measure and get the length and width in feet. Got an odd-shaped room? Break it into rectangles and calculate each part.
  2. Select tile size - Choose from common vinyl tile sizes (12"×12" square, 12"×24" plank, 6"×36" plank) or enter custom dimensions. Check your product packaging for exact tile size.
  3. Choose waste factor - Use 10% for standard straight layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns or complex rooms, or 5% if you're experienced with simple layouts.
  4. Add cost details (optional) - Enter tiles per box and price per box to estimate your total material cost. This helps with budgeting and shopping.

How We Calculate

Tiles = (Room Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Waste%)

Example Calculation:

  • • Room: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft
  • • Tile: 12 in × 12 in = 1 sq ft per tile
  • • Base tiles: 120 ÷ 1 = 120 tiles
  • • With 10% waste: 120 × 1.1 = 132 tiles
  • • Boxes needed: 132 ÷ 45 tiles/box = 3 boxes
